Fall 2016 "The Universe and Me" Workshop Wraps Up!

It's official - the Fall 2016 Rising Stargirls "The Universe and Me" workshop has wrapped up at YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley! From September 27 - October 20, the girls explored the universe through creative lenses, bringing their enthusiasm and creative ideas to the workshop each day. Click here for the full recap!

We develop interactive astronomy workshops that integrate creative strategies such as theater and writing, to nurture a relationship between girls' individual backgrounds, stories, and life experiences, and the universe they learn about. Our newest workshop is Universe: More Than Meets the Eye.

Created for middle-school girls (grades 6-8) from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences (American Indian or Alaska Native, African-American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander), Universe: More Than Meets the Eye will explore constellations in the night sky, planets in and outside of our solar system, and the unseen mysteries of the universe. We will use writing, theater, and games to process what we learn and discover. Bring your open minds, your own stories, and a sense of adventure!

Read more about this workshop in our Blog post here.

TEACHERS: Activities in this workshop can be done in your classrooms to complement an existing science curriculum, or as an after-school program. And it’s free of charge (funding provided by the National Science Foundation)! For more information or to schedule a future workshop, email Dr. Aomawa Shields at ashields<AT>astro<DOT>ucla<DOT>edu .
